A Staircase That Passes Through Itself
2026
A staircase gives direction to space. Its steps establish a sequence, translating the distance between two levels into a movement the body can understand. Here, that sequence encounters its own structure. The ascending form folds into an architectural contradiction: the route appears to pass through the very mass that makes its ascent possible. Concrete, shadow and sharply defined edges preserve the authority of a plausible construction, while the continuity of the journey becomes uncertain. The paradox shifts attention from the destination to the act of proceeding. To ascend may no longer mean to move away; to continue may not bring us elsewhere. Reduced to one essential gesture, the staircase becomes an image of movement held within itself, a passage whose apparent clarity unsettles our confidence in where it leads.
