The Level

The Level brings the paradox into a substance we associate with adaptation. Water should recover its equilibrium when a body is removed. Here it preserves a space taken away and a level that implies that missing body. Absence changes the measure of the present. The reading concerns what we continue to calculate with someone in mind: distances, time, available space. A relationship may end while the proportions of life remain arranged around it. The work does not illustrate a physical law; it deliberately suspends its consequences.
